Fall Prevention Program

Millbrook Orthopedic and Sports Physical therapy has recently initiated a program that reduces the rate/risk of falls in the elderly.  This is in response to reports from publications such as Journal of the American Medical Association, Clinical Geriatric Medicine, and the New England Journal of Medicine, which have documented the epidemic numbers of falls occurring in the over-65 population, as well as the subsequent health costs following these accidents.  Falls are the primary cause of accidental deaths in persons over age 65.  More than 90% of all hip fractures occur as a result of falls, and morbidity as a result of a hip fracture reaches 60%.  The elderly, who represent 12% of the population, account for up to 75% of the deaths resulting from falls. The cost of treating hip fractures in the elderly is in excess of $10 billion, and hip fractures account for only 2% of the serious injuries resulting from falls.  These statistics show the horrendous financial cost and the cost of suffering and morbidity resulting from falls.

There are many causes of falls, including: gait disturbances, balance disorders, weakness, lack of flexibility, cognitive impairment, medications, nervous system disorders, and vision problems.  Some of these are not preventable, however many can be significantly decreased.  There is a tendency for even a relatively healthy person to loose flexibility, strength and balance through the aging process; however the decrease can be slowed or reversed through an exercise program directed at a person’s weakness in these areas.  It is well documented that even octogenarians and older can improve their strength, balance, flexibility and cardiopulmonary endurance.  This improvement can significantly reduce the risk of falls in this population.

The program at MOST involves obtaining a baseline test of functional strength, flexibility, balance on a computerized balance testing device, and a walking endurance test.  The baseline test is followed by a six week, three times per week program to enhance these areas.  Testing is repeated at the end of the six weeks to document improvement, and the patient is given a home exercise program to continue with these activities on their own.  We have had many graduates of this program who have significantly decreased their risk of falls.  This not only increases one’s confidence in negotiating their environment and one’s quality of life, but also brings a peace of mind to their loved ones.

Functional Spine Program

At M.O.S.T., we are constantly striving to improve rehabilitative care in Dutchess County.  In accordance with this goal, we are introducing a new paradigm in spinal rehabilitation called The Functional Spine Program.  The intent of this 5 phase program is to provide state of the art treatment to patients in a safe and results oriented program.
Spinal pain is a multifactorial issue affecting many people every day.  Unfortunately, some physical therapy clinics do not treat patients in a consistent manner or base their treatments on current research.  Our solution is a consistent program that benefits patients and frees doctors to focus on their patients’ medical care rather than worry about their rehab program.  Through this objectively measured program, the patient is progressed by the attainment of functional goals, leaving room for the clinician to treat as he or she sees needed.  We go all-out to provide the highest quality rehabilitative care in order to help you get Back to doing the things you enjoy M.O.S.T.!”

Injury Prevention/ Performance Enhancement Program
“Think you have what it takes to get to the next level? We do

Happy Soccer GroupMost of the time, injuries have underlying causes.  Deficits in strength, mobility, balance, & coordination can increase the likelihood of injury & decrease athletic performance.

Many well-controlled studies show that sport-specific strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and conditioning training not only improves performance, but also decreases risk for injury.

Even after a full injury recovery and return to pre-injury activity level, further “post-hab” is very important in decreasing the chance of re-injury.

Managing Chronic Headaches

Chronic headaches affect one in six Americans (45 Million), and is the most frequent reason for visits to the doctor.  There are many types of headaches including: Migraine, Cluster, Vascular, Tension/Musculoskeletal, headaches as a result of trauma, those induced by medication and those caused by infection or systemic disease or tumors.  90% of the headaches are musculoskeletal or tension related.  Musculoskeletal relates to the muscles or joints in the neck.  Headaches can be caused by tight fascia, poor cervical mobility, tension in the jaw, poor dental occlusion, poor sleeping or simply poor mechanics in the head, neck and shoulder region.

At M.O.S.T., we have established a successful program to manage this most common type of headache.  After an evaluation by a physician to rule out any of the more serious causes of headaches, a physical therapist will thoroughly evaluate the shoulders, head, and neck region to assess the movement and tension of the region.  An individual plan of care will then be formulated.  Typically, the program will consist of manual therapy techniques to restore normal movement in the neck and head, and possibly the jaw.  Craniosacral techniques will be employed to normalize the tension of the fascia and movement of the cranial bones.  Home exercises, relaxation techniques and biofeedback to minimize stress and tension will also be used as well as a new low level LASER that is effective in decreasing one’s pain.  This low level LASER is effective in reducing inflammation, enhancing the function of nerves, speeding the healing process, normalizing tissue tension, and most importantly decreasing pain.  This multi modality approach seem to be very affective in getting patients back to a normal lifestyle

Recent success stories include:

  • a young girl with chronic headaches as a result of a fractured skull
  • a young man with neurogenic Lymes causing severe headaches
  • a middle aged career woman with significant personal and professional stress in her life.

Our internal statistics show that 87% of our headache patients improve considerably, as shown by a significant decrease in the severity, intensity, frequency and/or duration of their headaches.  We are here to help you get rid of your headaches!

Laser Therapy

Here at M.O.S.T. we have been using Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) as an adjunct for treating many conditions including wounds.  There have been ongoing studies into the effectiveness of this non-invasive modality with results indicating that this is a safe and effective adjunct to therapy for many conditions associated with pain and tissue injury.
