Falls can happen to anyone, but they tend to happen with more frequency as we age. Falls are among the leading causes of injury for Americans over the age of 65 and account for a vast majority of hip fractures sustained by the elderly. MOST wants to help keep you safe and offers services designed to prevent falls before they happen.

Causes of Falls

There are a variety of factors that can lead to falls, several of which are related to your strength and flexibility. Some of the common causes for falls include:

  • Gait issues
  • Balance disorders
  • Muscle weakness
  • Decreased flexibility
  • Reactions to medication
  • Nervous system disorders
  • Vision problems
  • Cognitive impairment

MOST’s Fall Prevention Programs

MOST uses a two-pronged approach to help prevent you from falling. The first step is our balance screening program, which is available to anyone. Using a computer software program, your balance will be tested and you will be assessed for risks for falls.

If your balance is a problem, we may recommend you take part in the MOST Fall Prevention Program. This six-week program consists of three therapy sessions per week, and begins with our computerized balance test.

Throughout the six weeks, you will do exercises designed to improve functional strength, flexibility and balance. On top of that, you will be given exercises to do at home to continue your progress. At the end of the six weeks, you will take the computerized balance test again to see the improvement you’ve made.
